A Modal View on Abstract Learning and Reasoning

چکیده

We present here a view on abstraction based on the relation between sentences in a partially ordered language L and truth values of these sentences on a set of instances W . In Formal Concept Analysis, this relation is materialized as a lattice denoted as G that relates L and the powerset P(W )). We show here that projections on a lattice (here either L or the powerset P(W )) that are known to ensure structure-preserving reductions of G, are equivalent to abstractions, defined here as sets of subsets closed under union (regarding P(W )) or under minimal specialization (regarding L) and order them in a lattice of abstractions. We then discuss specifically abstractions A of P(W ) and discuss the properties, of abstract implications. We then exhibit the class of (non normal) monotonic modal logics the semantic basis of which relies on such abstractions, and discuss how reasoning may be performed at variable abstraction levels.

Thinking Takes Time: a Modal Active-logic for Reasoning in Time Thinking Takes Time: a Modal Active-logic for Reasoning in Time

Most common sense reasoning formalisms do not account for the passage of time as the reasoning occurs, and hence are inadequate from the point of view of modeling an agent's ongoing process of reasoning. We present a modal active-logic that treats time as a valuable resource that is consumed in each step of the agent's reasoning. We provide a sound and complete characterization for this logic a...

Using Technology to Support Diagrammatic Reasoning about Center and Variation

We conducted two design experiments aimed at engaging sixth graders (11 years old) in statistical reasoning about center and variation. We examine in particular students’ informal notion of a “modal clump.” Using Peirce’s concept of diagrammatic reasoning, we analyze the interplay of 1) making plots with TinkerPlots – a computer data analysis tool, 2) experimenting with those plots, and 3) deve...

Learning English Auxiliary Modal Verbs by Iranian Children

Modal verbs in English are challenging to learn by speakers of other languages. The purpose of thiswas to shed light on the use of gesture in learning English modal verbs by Persian-speaking children. To achieve this, 60 elementary Iranian learners, studying at some institutes in Karaj took part in thisstudy. The participants were randomly put into one experimental group and one control group. T...

Towards a Framework for Reasoning About Emotional BDI Agents

The BDI model of agency is a well studied concept in Formal Logic for Rational Agents, mainly through the BDICTL [7] and KARO [7] logical frameworks. The former is based on the Branching Time Logic CTL [3], whereas the latter in based on Dynamic Logic [4]. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but the union of some properties of both frameworks provide, in our opinion, all the formal tools th...

Modal Merge and Minimal Move for Dislocation and Verb Clustering

Apparently non-related phenomena like wh-movement and Dutch verb clustering can be handled as bounded varieties of generalized composition in a categorial framework. This supports the unification of merge and move from an operational point of view. It abstracts away from hypothetical reasoning as an instrument of grammatical deduction.
